The first remains of Maiasaura, the “good mother lizard,” were discovered in 1978 in rocks of the Two Medicine Formation of Montana. In addition to adults, the remains include nests, eggs, and hatchlings showing evidence of parental care. The discovery that Maiasaura provided care to its young fundamentally changed the perception of dinosaurs as reptiles.
